Research Group Code of Conduct

In the lab we seek to create an inclusive culture that embraces the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). We do so by being aware of current issues in EDI through: attending lectures and workshops focused on EDI issues, by discussing recent articles on EDI and by maintaining a code of conduct that governs behaviour in our work environment. In hiring processes, we have implemented a blind process for review of candidates documents to help address our unconscious bias.

First and foremost, we value all lab members and seek to provide a positive academic experience.  Lab members are expected to be behave in a way that is respectful and courteous to their colleagues at all times.

We define unacceptable behaviour to include: offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of discussions, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. We do not tolerate harassment or discrimination by and/or of members of our community in any form.

(We acknowledge that this code of conduct was largely based on that of Timothée Poisot.)

Safety & Training

At the U of A, the safety of students and staff is paramount. We provide students with all necessary safety training before they go into the field. Once in the field, a variety of safety protocols are in place including, daily check-ins, daily safety meetings, access to satellite communication devices and all other necessary safety equipment.
